The Secret To Getting Rid Of Bed Bugs In Your Reno Home

May 28, 2021

Bedbugs in Reno are small, flat, and round like an apple seed and reproduce rapidly, making it easy to suffer an infestation that grows out of control quickly. Despite this rapid reproduction, most still try the DIY (do it yourself) route mostly because it's considered to be cheaper.

However, this isn't the case. Most DIY solutions only allow the situation to grow worse, which will ultimately cost more in the long run. That's why we're going to take a look at some common DIY methods and how ineffective they really are in the fight against bedbugs.

Exploring DIY Options

Before we dive in, we want to make it clear there is some success with DIY solutions. If there weren't any success, there would be no solutions to try. Despite the success, any feeling of accomplishment pales next to the time and money spent on incomplete results. Some common DIY solutions include:

  • Laundry: Using high heat in your washing machine and dryer will eliminate the bedbugs since they are vulnerable to this technique. Make sure the entire process lasts for a minimum of 30 minutes to ensure the bedbugs are taken out.
  • Vacuum And Seal: Bedbugs lay eggs, which means if you vacuum everything from the floor to the beds themselves, you'll likely suck up the eggs before they hatch. Once vacuuming is complete, be sure to seal the mattress, box spring, and other furniture in plastic to prevent future problems.
  • At-home Pesticides: With most pests, this would work, but bedbugs are actually immune to most, if not all regular pesticides. This is mostly due to the enzymes they produce, which detoxify the pesticide.
  • Essential Oils: While there have been promising results when used in a controlled environment, the use of essential oils as a DIY solution in real-world settings have been a failure. Scientists are unsure why this is the case, but considering these oils can cost $7-$20 a bottle, it's best to not conduct your own research in the meantime.
  • Ultrasonic Devices: The dream is to have devices that emit certain sounds or frequencies to keep pests away. This includes bedbugs. Unfortunately, the dream has yet to become a reality. Plus, the use of this type of device not only costs potentially a couple of hundred dollars, but the low heat emitted by the device actually attracts this pest.
