How To Tell If You Have Roaches In Your Reno Home

When you read the title of this article, did you wonder why you would need to know how to tell that you have roaches in your home? Cockroaches are well-known pests. You might think that seeing a roach in your home would be all the proof you need. Unfortunately, it isn't quite that simple. Let's start by looking at a few reasons why.

Why It Can Be Difficult To Detect Cockroaches

  • Cockroaches are nocturnal critters that are attracted to dark spaces. They don't prefer to be in the light where you can see them.

  • Cockroaches are attracted to tight spaces. You can look right at a cockroach infestation and not know it. Roaches can be hiding in seams, cracks, and recesses.

  • You may see a cockroach and not realize it's a roach. Are you aware that cockroach nymphs can look quite a bit different from their adult forms?

The Problem With Waiting Until You See Cockroaches

  • Experts say that when you see a cockroach it is likely that your home has thousands of roaches in it.

  • Cockroaches are vectors for disease transmission.

  • Cockroaches damage paper products and clothing.

  • There is a strong link between severe asthma and cockroach infestations.

Cockroach Warning Signs

Before you see a cockroach, you may see (or smell) a warning sign. Keep an eye, and a nose, out for these warning signs inside your Reno home.

Fecal Spotting — While cockroaches are far from the only pest that can stain your fabrics, carpets, and furniture with black spots, this warning sign can alert you to a potential roach infestation.

Shed Skins — Cockroaches pass through several development stages. As they grow, they shed their skins. These fragments can be found in tight spaces, dark voids, and in undisturbed areas of your home. They may also be found in slightly hidden areas of your kitchen and pantry, such as the backs of cabinets and drawers, under and around your oven, and behind food packages stored on shelves and floors.

Eggs Cases — Most pest cockroaches will leave egg cases lying around. These are dark, brownish-red. They'll be located in the same places you'll find shed skins. A female German cockroach will carry her egg case with her. When her offspring break free of the case, it will leave behind the fragments. These will be reddish-brown to orange in coloration.

Damage — When cockroaches dine on paper products, whether it's a food package or some wallpaper, you might notice the damage. This damage can also be caused by silverfish. When cockroaches dine on fabrics, they can create little holes. This type of damage can also be caused by carpet beetles. Keep in mind that when you find holes, it is only one piece of the puzzle. You'll need to find other signs as well.

An Unpleasant Aroma — Cockroaches excrete chemical pheromones. These chemicals have a scent. Some describe it as oily and musky. When you go into an area of your home that is infested with cockroaches, you may notice this unpleasant aroma.

What To Do When You Find Cockroaches

If you have a roach infestation, you might be tempted to correct the issue on your own. This is not recommended. Cockroaches can make your life miserable when you attempt to get rid of them.

  • If you attempt to control cockroaches with bait, you could find yourself more than a little bit frustrated. Roaches can develop an aversion to bait when it isn't applied properly. Some German cockroach populations are born with bait aversion.

  • If you attempt to control cockroaches with chemicals, you're more likely to harm yourself. Cockroaches don't stay on treated surfaces for long. If they are exposed to a chemical substance, they often shed their skins and create new skins that are more tolerant. This is done on a gene level, which means their offspring can be tolerant to the chemicals as well. If you have roaches in your home that are tolerant of chemicals, they can pass over them, pick them up, and transport them to sensitive locations.

  • If you have some success getting control of cockroaches in your home, but don't address entry points in your exterior and other key factors that contributed to your infestation, you can fail to address your infestation.

  • Failing to address a cockroach infestation can result in ongoing sickness, some of which could have you running to the hospital.
