The Diseases Pests Can Spread

Smart, Gentle Care for Every Space
|

For many of us, the idea of pests in our homes is just an annoyance. But did you know that many pests can also spread serious diseases? From West Nile virus to Lyme disease and much more, it's important to understand which pests are carrying these illnesses and how to protect yourself and your family from them.

West Nile Virus

West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne illness that can cause serious symptoms in humans. It can be spread through the bite of an infected mosquito or through contact with contaminated blood or organs. Symptoms vary depending on the severity of the infection, but may include headaches, joint pain, fever, rash, confusion, seizures, and paralysis. To protect against WNV, it is important to limit your exposure to mosquitoes by wearing protective clothing when outside and using insect repellent. Additionally, make sure any standing water around your home is removed or treated, as this is often where mosquitoes lay their eggs.

Rabies

Rabies is a fatal neurological disease caused by a virus found in the saliva of infected animals such as dogs, cats, bats, and raccoons. The virus is transmitted through bites or scratches from infected animals or through contact with their saliva. Although rare in people today due to vaccinations for pets, it is still important to be aware of the threat rabies poses and take precautions when encountering wild animals. If you are bitten by an animal that might have rabies, you should seek medical attention immediately, as treatment after being exposed must begin within 24 hours for it to be effective.

Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is an infectious disease caused by bacteria carried by ticks living off the blood of mammals like deer and mice. When these ticks attach themselves to humans, they transmit bacteria into our systems that can cause fever, headache, fatigue, and a rash at the site of the bite that looks like a bullseye shape. It can also lead to long-term problems, such as joint pain, if left untreated, so it’s important to see a doctor right away if you suspect you have been bitten by a tick carrying Lyme disease bacteria. To prevent tick bites, wear long sleeves when outdoors in wooded areas where ticks are common and use insect repellents containing DEET on your skin and clothing before going outside.
